UX mission

My UX mission for Expat.com: making a global community platform responsive and consistent.

Expat.com is an international platform for expatriates around the world: advice, real-estate listings, job offers, business directory and community. The mission was to lead the website redesign to make it responsive and harmonise the user experience across desktop, tablet and mobile.

Context

A service-rich site originally designed for a single screen.

Expat.com offered many services to millions of users worldwide, but the interface was not adapted to mobile and tablet browsing. Journeys varied from one screen to another, layouts were inconsistent, and the overall experience lacked uniformity across site sections.

The mission combined an in-depth UX analysis of the existing site, benchmarking against competitors and reference platforms, then production of wireframes and designs to unify the experience across three devices.

Expat.com before redesign: starting point for UX analysis and benchmarking.
Role

From diagnosis to design: a complete intervention on the experience.

The mission covered the full UX process: understanding existing usage, identifying market best practices, then designing responsive screens from wireframes through to final mockups.

UX analysis

Review of the existing site, identification of navigation inconsistencies, journey breaks and adaptation issues between devices.

Competitive benchmark

Analysis of community platforms and expatriate service websites to identify standards, best practices and differentiation opportunities.

Wireframes & UI design

Production of annotated wireframes followed by final UI mockups for desktop, tablet and mobile, aligned with the platform’s journeys and content.

Methodology

A structured UX approach, from analysis to design delivery.

Each step fed the next: analysis revealed friction points, benchmarking provided clear references, and wireframes validated the structure before investing in final design.

1

Existing site analysis

Complete review of Expat.com: navigation, content hierarchy, layout consistency, mobile behaviour and friction points identified by section.

2

Competitive benchmark

Comparative analysis of competing platforms and reference community services to identify UX standards and the most effective responsive practices.

3

Definition of responsive principles

Definition of adaptive layout rules: grids, content priorities, component behaviours and navigation logic at each breakpoint.

4

Multi-device wireframes

Production of annotated wireframes for key site sections: home, listings, jobs and community, adapted for desktop, tablet and mobile.

5

Final UI design

Production of high-fidelity mockups aligned with Expat.com’s visual identity, ready to hand over to developers for integration.

Deliverables

Concrete materials to guide redesign and production.

The work produced deliverables directly usable by design and development teams: documented analysis, structured benchmark, annotated wireframes and final UI mockups for three formats.

UX analysis report

Structured document listing inconsistencies, friction points and improvement priorities by site section, with illustrated recommendations.

Competitive benchmark

Comparative analysis of reference platforms: annotated screenshots, best-practice summary and opportunities identified for Expat.com.

Responsive wireframes

Annotated wireframes of key pages and journeys, adapted for desktop, tablet and mobile, with notes on adaptation logic.

UI mockups

High-fidelity designs ready for integration, consistent with the visual identity and optimised for three devices.

Outcome

A unified experience across all devices, consistent with real usage.

The redesign aligned the different site sections around a shared layout logic, made mobile navigation smoother and made Expat.com content and services accessible and readable on any device.
